Do not use this attorney!

I hired Mr. Brooks for an ID divorce, 100% agreeable on everything! After two months of no responses, I had to get firm with him via text message. He called right away to apologize and say he "had two clients with the same name and thought he had been responding to me." 5 months later, our "court da...te" was snowed out. He said he was going to talk to the judge and see if she would sign off on everything. Two days later via text, he tells me everything is done. I am Divorced! A month later (March) I call him asking for copies of the Divorce Decree and he avoids me for two days, I get firm via text message. He calls and says that one piece of paper is missing (financial affidavit) and that it is a newly required paperwork. We both fill that out and he tells me my ex will have to pay child support and he would get us in front of the judge ASAP. (didnt make sense because everything was 50/50 and we make the same). Everyday I am contacted him about when this court date would be. In the middle of April, he tells me the court date is May 12th. On May 11th, I texted him to confirm time and location and he tells me that I did not need to be there and he would get the judge to sign off on it! At this point, 8 months into something that should have taken 60 days, I seek a new attorney. I fire Mr. Brooks and he tells me I am "a difficult client". My new attorney pulls court records and he discovered that Mr. Brooks had not file anything on my behalf until April 14 2021!! My new attorney has requested a refund and Mr. Brooks agreed to return the unused portion of my retainer fee but has failed to do so as of July. I have filed a CAP/Bar complaint!

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
