When your life partner suddenly becomes your adversary, it is easy to feel isolated, overwhelmed and scared. It can be difficult to think objectively about your situation when you are going through an emotional upheaval, such as a divorce or custody battle. I will advise you about the process, whether it is an agreed divorce, a divorce that is negotiated over a period of time, mediation or litigation that will ultimately end up in trial. While I can never guarantee a particular outcome, I will help you understand what the issues are, what the Court will consider should the case go to trial, and what the range of likely results may be. I will help you try to reach a fair, reasonable and amicable resolution in the hopes that you can make the transition to a new beginning without the significant emotional and financial costs of going to trial. You may feel pressure from or threatened by the spouse who is divorcing you to do what he/she wants, but he/she may no longer have your best interest at heart, which can be difficult to see while you are going through a divorce. You need an advisor and advocate who has your interests, alone, at heart.
I will advise you about your rights in the areas of equitable distribution of marital property and debt, alimony, child custody, child support and other issues that may arise.
Every divorce is different, and one or more of a variety approaches may be necessary to help you achieve the best resolution with the least possible amount of strife and cost. Trial can be costly and emotionally gruelling, but if it is not possible to resolve your case through negotiation or mediation, I am a trial lawyer with over 27 years of experience and will advocate for you at trial.
I am also a Supreme Court Rule 31 Family Law Mediator and enjoy mediating family law cases.
