Practice area

Douglas Hargett is a native of Cherokee, Alabama. He practiced law in Huntsville in two of Alabama’s largest law firms, Maynard Cooper & Gale, P.C. and Balch & Bingham LLP, before returning home to join Hall | Tanner | Hargett as a partner in July, 2009. As a trial lawyer, Douglas regularly represents both plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation in state and federal courts and alternative dispute resolution proceedings (arbitration and mediation) throughout North Alabama.

Douglas attended law school at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) School of Law, graduating cum laude. While at Ole Miss, he served as an Associate Editor of the Mississippi Law Journal (excellence in legal writing) and on the Executive Committee of the Moot Court Board (excellence in trial advocacy). Prior to law school, Douglas attended the University of North Alabama (UNA) on baseball and leadership scholarships and graduated magna cum laude with a double-major in Political Science and Biology. Douglas was twice named the Disney Wide World of Sports National Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Verizon Academic All-American of the Year for all College Divisions, in addition to being named as a Rawlings All-American First Baseman and the Alabama Sportswriters’ Small College Athlete of the Year. He also received UNA’s prestigious Turris Fidelis Award for outstanding service to the University.

Douglas was selected by Super Lawyers as a 2013 Alabama Rising Star for demonstrating excellence in the practice of law, an honor limited to only 2.5 percent of attorneys within the state. He has also been rated as an AV Preeminent attorney by Martindale-Hubbell since 2011, the highest possible rating for both legal ability and ethical standards. He has been recognized in Business Alabama’s publication of Top Attorneys: Alabama’s Outstanding Young Lawyers. Douglas was elected and served as President of the Colbert County Bar Association in 2012. While practicing law in Huntsville, Douglas was elected by his peers to serve as President Elect of the Huntsville Young Lawyers. In 2009, he was nominated to receive the Huntsville/Madison County Young Professional of the Year Award before returning home to the Shoals to practice law.

Douglas is married to the former Courtney Horton of Sheffield, Alabama. Outside of the office, Douglas enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, coaching his children’s youth sports teams, politics, golf and running.

Cycling Accident
On July 15th 2013, I was cycling on a loop I do almost everyday when the weather will allow it. While I was riding up Colbert Heights mountain in Tuscumbia I was struck from behind by a Ford F150 that was moving right around 40mph. As a result my back was severely broken as was my left leg and my neck. My Pelvis also was seen to have two fractures and my I lost the function of about 1/3 of my left kidney. On the afternoon of July 16th 2013 I had a surgery performed on my back so that hopefully I would be able to walk again in several months. Many people have what you might call a "routine" back surgery every day to relieve pressure or make some small tweak here and there to reduce discomfit and pain. Most of these types of surgery last around one to two hours and there is minimal downtime so the patient can get back to a normal sense of life as quickly as possible. My surgery lasted six hours. Entry was made from my left side forcing the removal of a rib. The reason the surgeons went in this way was so they could remove broken bits of my backbone and replace it with titanium. While the surgery did allow me to walk again on my on, in about four months time, I had a lot of other issues that I am still dealing with, such as no abdominal wall on my left side, severe nerve damage which was caused from the crash and the surgery combined and a partially functioning left kidney that was also caused from the crash. After a few weeks had passed and I was at home, my friend Douglas Hargett came to visit me and see how I was doing. This visit forced me to look and see how much money my insurance would cover and where I was concerning co-pays and where I would be a year from then. After seeing the tidal wave of debt that I was about to be responsible for it made me really mad that a person can just run you over with no repercussions felt on their side. I contacted Douglas and asked him to file suit so we could at least have these huge bills paid for. Just over a year later with Douglas and Mike Tanner's guidance we settled for a large amount of money to reimburse these debts I had accumulated. Of course, I've know Douglas and Mike for a long time but the level of professionalism and time they put into our case was amazing. If you are the victim of a driver who hurts you in some way while your riding your bike I would strongly suggest that you make a visit or call Hall-Tanner-Hargett. They understand in great detail the law concerning this type of accident and they know how to execute it in court of law.
