Edward L. “Eddie” Alley is a criminal defense attorney in Athens, Alabama, with more than two decades of experience in Alabama criminal courts. Since beginning his legal career in 2002, he has handled criminal cases from multiple perspectives, including as a prosecutor, defense attorney, instructor, and municipal judge.
Alley began his career with the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s Office, where he had previously clerked and tried felony jury cases while attending the University of Alabama School of Law. As a Deputy District Attorney, he prosecuted cases ranging from serious violent offenses to drug and property crimes, conducted grand jury proceedings, and tried numerous felony cases before juries.
He was later selected to serve as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in connection with Project Safe Neighborhoods, where he evaluated cases for federal prosecution. Alley subsequently joined the Limestone County District Attorney’s Office, handling thousands of criminal cases in District Court and hundreds of felony matters in Circuit Court, with particular responsibility for drug and narcotics prosecutions.
In 2011, Alley entered private practice in Athens and founded Edward L. Alley, P.C. His practice focuses on criminal defense, including felony and misdemeanor charges, DUI, drug offenses, domestic violence, theft and property offenses, traffic violations, and other criminal matters. He regularly represents clients in the Circuit and District Courts of Limestone County and other courts in North Alabama.
Alley also has extensive experience teaching criminal law and procedure to law enforcement officers. He has served as an instructor at Alabama police academies, teaching subjects including DUI law, Alabama criminal law, constitutional law, and search and seizure. He also teaches legal courses at the National Center for Explosives Training and Research for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, providing instruction to local, state, federal, and military personnel.
In addition to his work as an attorney, Alley has served as a municipal judge. His experience as a prosecutor, defense attorney, instructor, and judge provides him with a broad perspective on Alabama’s criminal justice system.
Alley graduated with honors from the University of Alabama with a degree in Political Science and earned his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Alabama.
