We wouldn't go to anyone else

Almost two years ago, my son was charged with aggravated battery as a result of a bar fight that he didn't start (but he admittedly did finish). Mr. Spicola was our third attorney. The first offer through the public defender's office was almost seven years in prison. We then hired an attorney with a ...good reputation and good reviews and nothing happened for almost a year. A week before trial, he told us the offer had dropped to four years and that my son should take it. My son has been in trouble before but had no violent history. A neighbor, who is a police officer, recommended Mr. Spicola. We met with him around 6 pm the Friday before trial and hired him on the spot. He was able to get the case continued the next Monday and got started right away. Apparently, only two witnesses had been previously set for deposition and only one showed. How the other attorney could set a case for trial knowing little to nothing about what the witnesses would say is beyond me. Mr. Spicola took eight depositions within two months and was able to find three defense witnesses that the other two attorneys said they couldn't find. He filed a Stand Your Ground motion to dismiss and on the day of the hearing the State Attorney's Office offered six months of probation on a second degree misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. We went from four years in prison to six months of probation. I am really confused about some of the reviews posted. When you hire an attorney you aren't guaranteed a result. At least not by an ethical attorney. You pay for skill, experience and effort. Mr. Spicola was amazing and I will forever be in his debt.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
