Robert Michael Downey

I have retained Robert (Bob) Downey since 1991 to represent me and conduct prior art searches and evaluations, draft and file US and international patents applications (14 and counting), research and register trademarks. Bob has always given me sound, timely legal advice on an unusually wide array of... potentially patentable areas to include a phone design, a video game control system, green energy locomotive power system, and several unrelated aviation system applications. Bob has always given me thorough, insightful IP legal advice, under-promising and over-delivering. I recently had Bob draft two applications in an area I don't think he had ever worked before and he nailed both drafts and related illustrations well beyond my expectations. He recently negotiated directly with the USPTO examiner(s) to insure that DoD related security reviews were completed in a timely manner, preserving my international patent application filing rights. Bob's communications skills are outstanding - always providing precise, intelligent insights at the lay level and avoiding unfamiliar legal and IP jargon. (And what makes this really exceptional is that I moved out of the South Florida area in 1993, and last interacted with him in person in 1994; everything I have done with him since then has been via mail, email, and phone conversations). I have always had good experiences with Bob's business (billing) practices, to the point I think he may undercharge for his services. Perhaps most importantly, I have complete trust and faith in Bob's fiduciary judgement, and never had the slightly doubt that he was acting in my best legal and fiscal interests. I hope never retires because I couldn't imagine working with another IP/patent attorney.

I became acquainted with Robert Downey back in 1996 when I applied for my first patent. I have continued to work with him through the years, to successfully patent 4 products including the one I am currently engaged in. Robert has an uncanny grasp on product design and actually helped me throu...gh some unsettling changes by merely questioning me about functionality. He has acquired many US patents as well as several foreign patents. His office is well staffed with very knowledgeable coworkers and they can always come up with an answer to any question I have ever had. Robert’s proficiency of protecting an idea has stood the ultimate test. One of my products went to a very large domestic company who was looking to purchase the technology. The first place your patent will go is to their legal and engineering departments to see if they can get around your patent. The company could not defeat Robert’s patents and the deal went through. I have since moved far from Robert’s location but I would not ever consider using another patent attorney. I cannot recommend him too strongly.
