Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, Jackie Roys attended the local Florida Coastal School of Law and received her Juris Doctor in December of 2001. Ms. Roys took the opportunity to study abroad while attending law school, enjoying a summer at Oxford University, Oxford, England. Prior to attending Florida Coastal, Ms. Roys received her Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University, graduating in 1997. While at Florida State University, Ms. Roys focused on juvenile justice and did an internship at the Dozier School for juvenile offenders where the most severe offenders are housed.
Following that career path, Ms. Roys moved to Volusia County in 2002 and began her legal career as a prosecutor for the 7th Judicial Circuit. After spending a year in the Juvenile division at the State Attorney’s Office, Ms. Roys spent the next nine years prosecuting felony cases. Among positions held during her tenure, Ms. Roys was responsible for organizing Florida bar certified continuing legal education classes, supervised both the Sex Crimes Unit, and the Drug Unit prior to being assigned to the Homicide Investigations Unit in September of 2009. Throughout her career as a prosecutor, Ms. Roys has tried over 50 felony trials, with the last six being homicides. Many of these high profile cases resulted in life sentences without the possibility of parole.
While a prosecutor, Ms. Roys also taught as an adjunct professor at Daytona Beach Community College. As a member in good standing with the Florida Bar, Ms. Roys participates locally as a member of the Volusia County Bar Association, the Volusia/Flagler Association for Women Lawyers, the family law section of the Volusia County Bar Association, and is a member of the local chapter of the Dunn Blount Inns of Court. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Volusia County Bar Association; Board of Directors for the VFAWL, and volunteers for the local Teen Court. Ms. Roys enjoys playing league, tournament, and travel co-ed softball.
