David and Goliath

Our experience with our attorney, Matthew Miller, was terrific. His efforts on our behalf gave us the result we were hoping for. He is professional, knowledgeable, and persistent. His knowledge of yachts, the maritime industry, and maritime law was indispensible in obtaining a fair settlement with... our claim. Our 54’ sailboat was heavily damaged when Hurricane Irma passed directly over the British Virgin Islands on 6th September 2017. Fortunately, we were insured. When we made our claim, our insurance company responded with an offer to settle for 20% of the vessel’s insured value. Obviously, we found this offer completely unfair. Soon after, we decided we needed a “David” to help us fight the “Goliath” that was the insurance company. And that’s when we contacted Attorney Miller (Matt). Matt helped us organize a plan to buttress our claim that the insurance company’s list of damages were inadequate and their repair estimates were unrealistically low. Matt’s hands-on knowledge of yachts and what it takes to repair them helped us find additional damage not previously noted and to gather accurate and comprehensive repair estimates. He also wisely developed a cordial relationship with the insurance adjuster while the case was being developed. Matt presented our insurance company with a clear, comprehensive case for dramatically increasing their settlement offer, and within a few days the adjuster declared our yacht a Constructive Total Loss, which entitled us to the entire insured value, less deductible. We opted to buy the yacht back from the insurance company, and Matt was instrumental in negotiating a fair buy-back price. We are grateful for Matt’s assistance with our case and will not hesitate to contact him should we need his legal services again. We highly recommend him.
