Mark D. Hobson

Mark D. Hobson is an experienced Corporate, M&A and Securities attorney licensed in Colorado and Florida, with offices in Coral Gables, Florida.  Mark’s clients include hedge funds and private equity funds, entrepreneurs and investors, sole proprietors and start-ups, established small businesses and medium-sized companies, brokers and dealers, investment advisers and investment companies and EB-5 Regional Centers.

Having lived, studied and worked abroad, Mark offers his clients a breadth and perspective that few others can provide.  Having worked for major law firms as well as a global financial institution in South America, Mark has negotiated numerous large and sophisticated business deals, including asset-based and trade-finance deals, often representing the interests of European and U.S. clients in a foreign setting. Having practiced law for over a decade and a half with major law firms in Miami, Mark is able to provide his clients with legal assistance and guidance typically available only to more affluent individuals and institutional clients.  

Mark’s path to the practice of law was atypical.  Raised in the Midwest, Mark followed in his Father’s footsteps after high school and became a licensed blacksmith, focusing exclusively on thoroughbred racehorses. In January 1985 Mark began taking college courses at night—while continuing to work as a farrier full time during the day—and it was during his night studies that Mark shifted his energies toward international business law.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Mark received a law degree from THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW in 1992.  Mark continued his legal studies in Brussels, Belgium, where he received a Masters of Laws in International, European & Comparative Law from the VRIJE UNIVERSITEIT BRUSSEL in 1993.

In 1994, Mark moved to São Paulo, Brazil, where he worked for major law firms before accepting a position to work in-house with Banco Citibank, S.A.  At Banco Citibank, S.A., he served as U.S. legal adviser for cross-border transactions (governed by New York law) involving the bank.  In 1997, when the country of Brazil privatized its telecommunications sector and auctioned off Band B mobile cellular telephone concessions, Mark represented the bank in its issuance of tens of millions of dollars' worth of guaranties, letters of credit and standby letters of credit.

In November 1998, Mark relocated to Miami, where he initially practiced for 12 years in the corporate department of Shutts & Bowen, LLP, the oldest law firm in Miami, before working for almost 4 years with a boutique law firm on Brickell Avenue, the heart of Miami’s financial district.  In July 2014, Mark opened up HOBSON FIRM.

Mark is the Editor-in-Chief of the Editorial Board for the Newsletter of the Middle Market and Small Business Committee of the ABA's Business Law Section, and is Co-Chair of that Committee’s Newsletter Subcommittee.  Mark also serves on the ABA Model Shareholders’ Agreement Task Force as well as the ABA Middle Market & Small Business Subcommittee Task Force on short-form Stock Purchase Agreement and short-form Asset Purchase Agreement.

Mark currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Play Golf For Life, Inc., a Florida non-profit corporation that Mark helped establish with two members of the PGA of America.
