I am a general practitioner. Meaning, I handle most legal matters. I have support staff that have been with me for several years. I would not be able to do what I do on a daily basis without my staff. I live in Oconee County, Georgia where I run the Law Offices of Michael R. Childs, L.L.C. I am a Member of Briarwood Baptist Church. I am married and the father of two children.
I graduated in 2001 from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors in Business Administration. After leaving UGA, I went to law school at the Appalachian School of Law in Virginia.
As a private attorney, I worked with one of the best attorneys I know: Alan M. Alexander, Jr. He gave me my first job when I came to Oconee County. Under Mr. Alexander, I handled a variety of legal matters: Auto Accidents, Divorce, Wills/Probate, DUI’s, Domestic Violence, Drug Issues, etc.
Working with Mr. Alexander, I handled dozens of personal injury cases with quite a bit of success and now, working on my own, I continue to have success handling personal injury matters.
As a Criminal defense attorney, it is my responsibility to represent clients who have been accused of wrongdoing and ensure that justice is preserved. My clients are presumed innocent until proven guilty by the State. The State has the burden of proof to show beyond a reasonable doubt that my client commited the crime in which they are charged.
I also handle Family law matters (Divorces, Adoption, Juvenile matters, etc.). Arguably, this is the most stressful area of law, but can be the most rewarding. It is a real pleasure to help good folk when they are in need, but even better, being able to help a child who has been abused or neglected is rewarding.
As a private attorney, there are so many other things that have come through the door. Countless probate matters, drafting wills, setting up businesses, contract disputes, drafting contracts, real estate disputes, restoring gun rights, etc. The wonderful thing about practicing law is that each day is a little different.
When I am not practicing law, I teach it. I teach legal courses for the University of North Georgia, Savannah Technical College, Athens Technical College and a few other small schools from time to time. It is very rewarding when I get to teach young people (and nontraditional students too).
If I or anyone in this firm can be of assistance, do not hesitate to give us a call. The phone number for the Firm is (706) 549-4007. Thanks!

Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter
I have been the opposing counsel in multiple Divorce and Juvenile cases against Mr. Childs. I find him to be always very prepared and competent in his diligent representation of his clients. I have no hesitation in endorsing Mr. Childs for someone looking for an attorney that will fully represent their needs in any legal matter.

Mike's great answers here show his great ability to analyze and resolve problems, and make him a good choice to hire as an attorney.

Stuart Douglas, Divorce and separation Attorney on Jun 9, 2016
Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter
Working with Mr. Childs was always pleasant in resolving matters. Mr. Childs would always advocate for his client but would not do so in an inappropriate manner or needlessly making litigation more difficult.

Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter
Mr. Childs and I met as opposing counsel in a highly contested divorce case. From that case, I learned that Mr. Childs has the ability to get an angry client to see that settlement often makes more sense than fighting. Mr. Childs and I both had to do that for our clients in that case, and we were able to reach a fair settlement that spared both clients further financial hardship. Shortly after concluding that case, Mr. Childs invited me to help him coach a mock trial team, and we became great friends. I often seek Mr. Child's help and advice with some of my more difficult cases. Since I am eager to get Mr. Child's advice myself, I certainly would recommend others to seek the advice and services of this excellent attorney.
