Show Me the Money

I hired Attorney Thomas to help me keep my job as a teacher but he did not. I was asked to show him the money before talking to him. I paid the consultation fee and more money for 3 hours of help. After a limited amount of communication with Attorney Thomas,he told a third party individual that he ...was no longer my attorney but never informed me. He failed to communicate with me and provide positive client support. I thought a client was innocent until proven guilty. When I did contact him he informed me that he would need more money because I did not pay him beyond the scope of what I wanted him to do. I wanted fair treatment from the attorney I hired and not a biased person who just wanted me to show him the money.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond. If a Client retains an attorney for problem A, the attorney will not also represent that Client for problem B, C and D, without additional compensation and/or an amended contract. Let me be more specific. This Client initially retained me to address an issue with Fulton County, but later faced termination from a different county, and had a certification issue with the PSC. The three (3) hour retainer was ONLY for the initial, Fulton Cty issue. It would be absurd to expect that I (or any attorney) would also represent the Client in the termination hearing AND the PSC issue for three (3) hours. As I explained to this Client on several occasions, a hearing alone could range from 15 to 20 hours depending on the allegation(s). It is unfortunate that she would use Avvo to discredit my reputation, but she is entitled to her opinion. Hopefully the facts will give a more accurate representation of her "complaint." Lastly, I've successfully represented educators for over sixteen (16) years. I didn't say "show me the money," but I am old enough to remember Cuba Gooding, Jr's scene in the movie, Jerry Maguire.

Relationship: Other

"I endorse this lawyer. A family member is an educator and she was targeted by a Cobb County school Principal after 10 years of exceptional service and admiration from students and parents. She was given the option of either resigning or being terminated which came with a scarlet letter and unsatisfactory record. She decided to contest the termination which was covered by local media and she hired Mr Thomas. He went the distance for her and while the initial trial went against her despite overwhelming support from the community of parents, students and similarly targeted educators, Mr Thomas still knew of other options. He was able to secure a settlement and clear her record to the best of his ability. She now works in another cointy and was named teacher of the year after being there for three years. He helped her salvage her career and continue being an educator. Well done Mr Thomas."

Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter

"I have known Borquaye and worked with him in connection with a number of Education/Administrative law matters for many years. We have been on opposing sides. He has also been a lawyer whom I have turned to for advice on numerous matters. He is extremely knowledgeable and he is a tireless advocate for his clients. For a number of years, he has been one of the foremost advocates for teachers and other professionals facing job termination or sanctions against their licenses. Borquaye has an excellent reputation and his clients are in extremely good hands."
