Incompetence in person

I hired this gentleman D. Shea several years ago when I was going through a highly contested divorce and custody case. After ignoring several reflags, I ended up letting him represent me for almost 1.5 years and losing close to half a million dollars (which caused me to delay my planned retirement fo...r at least five years now). I finally fired him because of the following reasons: 1) his incompetence stemming from taking on too many cases and not doing well in any, 2) his inability to think and write well English so the documents would not be confusing for the judges 3) his low prep-time dedicated to cases, being thinly-stretched 4) the main reason however is his treacherous behavior making me lose my legal advantage. He prematurely disclosed the results of My PI’s investigation into my ex's extramarital affair to the other side's attorney Mr. W. B. Fortino from mooretaylorlaw who happens to be his attorney-friend. Because of this, I ended up losing the advantage of surprise to the other side who were then able to device new strategies during settlement negotiations to their advantage. Mr. Shea, a gentleman by demeanor yet an incompetent lawyer lost my respect, trust and cost me half a million dollars during settlement negotiations and time with my kids. I am a foreign-born academic, but I was able to write a lot better than him. He’s been late in court fillings of forms, very disorganized thoughts, his office staff even worse. These people are taking advantage of hurt people in the divorce industry. The writing must be simple, not academic, thus a lawyer must be able to turn a client’s writings/affidavits into a much simpler fact-based document free of emotions so the judges can understand the case within five minutes of reading the material. I could have been in a much better position with the custody of my young children had Mr. D. Shea not caused the other side to take advantage of us by letting them come prepared to the settlement and the subsequent trials instead of surprising the other side with our investigative report. one piece of information: a year later, after I fired this gentleman, during deposition of my ex-spouse, we found out that the other's side along with her attorney were reading my private text messages between me and Mr. Shea, a criminal offense punishable by up-to 5-years in jail, that would have forced to other side settle immediately. Instead, he didn’t make much deal about that and alerted the other side. I can only give him 1 out of 5 rating because there are no negative -numbers. My phone was hacked and Mr. Shea would not do anything about it because he was complicit and in bed with the other side. I finally cut my losses with Mr. Shea and fired him after working with him a year and a half and hired a new attorney legal scholar and trial advocate. Not only I was able to get the full custody but also was able to force the other side's several attorneys including the original Mr. Fortino from MooreTaylorLaw Firm resign two days before the final trial because I opened up another criminal case against my ex’s lawyer and indirectly against its firm which we didn't not pursue any further at that time. Our action caused havoc in the firm and all partners started showing up in my trials. This period gave me a time advantage, so I could prove to the court that I was a better parent which I did when the children’s wonderful honest guardian ad litem Mrs. Elizabeth Brenham from West Columbia along with MUSC forensic psychiatry department produced a report to my advantage. My ex had no choice but to throw the towel and settle. I have decided to write this piece today and not years ago after coincidentally talking to Mr. Shea's new client who happened to be at a friend's gathering last night. I met this person who is going through similar experiences with his lawyer. His lawyer turned out to be, truly yours, the only famous Mr. David Shea. I didn’t want this person to go through the same painstaking process.

Attorney-client privilege and a sealed file prohibit me from responding fully to this review from this reviewer (who is not using his real name if he was the actual client), but suffice it to say this review is full of error. The client actually gave me a gift at the conclusion of his case.

Not current with IRS guidelines

Hired Shea for alimony adjustment. I did inquire at initial meeting about the new law of 2017 concerning taxes. He said that i was not eligible. He was wrong! My CPA informed me of this at tax time. Too late now.
