You can defend the suit by claiming that you paid what he claims you owe and/or you can countersue the landlord for an independent cause of action...

Attorney Bollinger is absolutely correct. Restitution cannot be discharged by bankruptcy. See 11 USC 522(a)(19)(B)(iii).
