also known as Tom Barwick
Tom has been licensed to practice law in North Carolina since 1980. He graduated from East Carolina University in 1977 and earned his JD from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1980 where he was also a member of the Law Review.
Tom has a varied and extensive experience in law. As a third year law student, Tom interned a year with the United States Attorney's Office in Richmond, where he assisted in criminal and civil litigation, actually trying his first case in federal court under Virginia's third year practice rule. Returning home to eastern North Carolina, Tom joined a general practice law firm in Goldsboro. He values experiences gained there because it exposed him to a variety of clients and practice areas, including criminal, domestic and personal injury. He tried cases in all court levels from state magistrate court to federal court, and in all state appellate courts.
In 1985 Tom started his own solo practice where he continued to represent a variety of clients in all areas of law. Tom merged his practice with another group in 1988 to form the firm of Walker, Young and Barwick, PA. In this growing practice, Tom began a specialization in civil litigation while developing an insurance defense practice that included automobile negligence and medical malpractice. Gradually though, Tom began to focus his practice in medical negligence.
In 1999, Tom had the opportunity to join Martin & Jones in their medical malpractice section. He understands that injuries occur when medical care goes wrong and takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on the patient and family. Tom welcomed the idea of putting his many years of experience in litigation to use helping victims of malpractice. He finds representing victims not only more challenging but he also gains a greater sense of satisfaction when his clients successfully obtain closure from their encounters with bad medical care.
Tom has achieved the highest attorney rating, "AV," by Martindale-Hubbell, an independent legal services company whose peer-review attorney ratings service is an objective indicator that an attorney has the highest ethical standards and professional ability.
Tom resides in Clayton, North Carolina with his wife and their three children. He is a community activist, having served as a board member and president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Chamber's Military Affairs Committee, a member of the Jaycees, a Mason, a Shriner, a city councilman for the City of Goldsboro, a member of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Institutional Review Board, and a deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro. He has served as president of the Wayne County Bar Association. Tom participates in a variety of other volunteer organizations.
Tom enjoys a variety of hobbies and activities but especially loves being with his family, traveling, sailing, diving and cooking.

"I endorse this lawyer. I have known Tom for many years. He is a smart and experienced lawyer. Further, before representing patients and other plaintiffs, he worked for a defense firm and, therefore, understands what the other side thinks. If it were my family member that had a case, I would refer them to Tom."
