OUTCOME: Favorable decision at Court of Appeals

This case began with a husband and wife preparing estate planning documents. The dying husband would leave his estate to his beloved wife and she, in turn, would leave the remaining estate to his two ... children, Heidi and Adam, whom she considered like her own. When the husband died shortly thereafter, and his estate passed to the wife, she began the process of completing the estate plan to leave the estate to her stepchildren. She then died suddenly and unexpectedly before signing the documents, and her distant and estranged family came forward to claim the estate. After we successfully obtained a ruling in King County Superior Court that the estate should pass to the children, her family appealed. I was able to successfully argue the case at the Court of Appeals, which upheld the trial court decision in favor of our clients.
