Awful, doesn’t return calls, doesn’t put any time into your case, court appt for a reason

He contacted me one time during the year of my case, the public defenders office he works at does not answer phone but Smallwood himself doesn’t answer or call back or check his voicemails, he turned on me and tried to get me in trouble in court of law bc of his biased awful practice of a “lawyer” he... should be disbarred for his unprofessionalism. This morning at rocky call before we ended our client lawyer relationship he was falling asleep and texting whole time during court. Had to go back at 1pm he was supposed to file this paper to not be my lawyer anymore and I even heard the judge ask him to do that well 1pm rolls around he told the judge he didn’t know he wanted a paper filed. I’m an associate degree hvac student and I knew he said that, probably bc he was texting and sleeping in court this morning and not to mention he has spent all of 3 minutes on my case in past year and reason of that 3 minutes was seconds before my docket call when I need to give the judge answers. I was oblivious of everything in my case had to call circuit court to figure it out all on my own. Then one of his associates grins and makes faces just so unprofessional plz ask the judge to appoint you a new public defender save yourself the waste of time and embarrassment. On 1/7/25 a man before me today before losing mr Smallwood as a lawyer he said something wrong and got his client thrown in jail, should’ve seen the disgust on the man’s face I hope he sees this or whoever does does the research to who it was as why I provided date, goodluck

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
