Born in Roanoke Virginia, John graduated from Harvard College and received his J.D. from Washington & Lee School of Law. John was the Note and Comment Editor of the Washington & Lee Law Review. Upon graduating from law school, John served as a Law Clerk for the Honorable James C. Turk, United States District Judge for the Western District of Virginia. Following this clerkship, John joined the Richmond law firm of McGuire Woods Battle & Boothe. John returned to Roanoke, Virginia in 1986, and continued to practice law. In 1996, he joined forces with John Lichtenstein, and had a successful trial practice from 1996 until he left to become the United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia in 2015.
John has a reputation for taking on difficult cases, advocating for justice and fairness for individuals who have been treated unfairly, and whose voices have been ignored. His diverse practice focuses on assisting individuals facing serious legal challenges. John has represented women in an unequal pay case; nursing students in loss of accreditation cases; individuals whose civil rights were violated; and a family whose family member was killed by a stun gun while incarcerated. John also filed suit against the Commonwealth of Virginia regarding Virginia’s lottery practices.
