Biography

26 yrs Labor & Employment Law / Litigation Prior Fortune 500 In-House Council w/ 30,000+ employees across 22 states and Canada: 14yrs. Represents professional & business clients across Virginia in preventing and resolving employer-employee disputes.

I have extensive corporate experience in all Human Resource employee life-cycle management and writing, reviewing & litigating contracts and agreements: including executive/professional employment contracts; non-completes; severance agreements; restrictive covenants; force reductions; union issues.

Over 26 years, I've handled hundreds of complicated discrimination cases, At Norfolk Southern Corp. I handled these cases for over 30,000 employees across 22 States. Workplace discrimination can be obvious or unconscious. It is always unlawful. I help my clients prevent and resolve these violations.

“Employment issues are stressful and emotional for all involved parties. If you have a legitimate claim or defense, I can help you. If I don’t believe that you will prevail, I’ll tell you and not waste your time and money. I’m always a phone call away and ready to help.” —Tom Shumaker, Esq.

I've investigated, negotiated, litigated and supervised litigation teams in 100s of labor, employment, commercial and civil litigation trial and appellate cases, in state and U.S. District Courts on behalf of large, multi-state employers including NSC, Bayer, Proctor & Gamble, UPMC and PNC Bank.

"COVID has raised numerous, complicated workplace issues for employers and employees: layoffs, firings, contract disputes, overtime/wage/hour issues, safety. New Federal and state laws complicate these rights and obligations. If you believe you were fired or treated unfairly, I can advise you."

Excellent attorney that is compassionate.

Tom Shumaker is an excellent attorney. He was very knowledgeable and had the ability to think of several different approaches to dealing with the legal matter we had with the City of Newport News. Ultimately his advice lead to me being able to resolve the matter quickly and efficiently. I want to add... that he is the most compassionate attorney that I have ever worked with. He took the time to discuss the situation with me and answer all my questions in a way that I could understand. I highly recommend Tom Shumaker for all your employment and labor law needs.

Look No Further

Attorney Shumaker is not only highly knowledgable and compassionate, but his years of experience leading employment law from the "inside" with a large corporation shows. His legal insight and strategy definitely helped me in settling my wrongful termination/hostile work environment case when other a...ttorneys wanted to approach it from a different direction. His efforts also prevented my previous employer from enforcing a non-compete clause; which was very important for someone in the medical profession. I will be forever grateful and definitely recommend him to others.

Highly Recommend

Choosing Mr. Shumaker as my attorney in my corporate case against Wells Fargo was not a decision I came to lightly, and I believe I made the right decision. His urgency, compassion, and attention to detail definitely aided in winning my case and I would enthusiastically recommend him to other profess...ionals.

Great lawyer!

Tom is a great lawyer. He is easy to talk to, and he explained the law to me very well, in simple terms. The law firm he works at - Ernest Law Group - is very nice. I liked the support staff and the way I was treated by everyone.

  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
