I started my legal career with the Portsmouth Public Defender's Office. This served as an invaluable experience as I handled all types of criminal cases from misdemeanor driving charges to murder. After almost four years as an Assistant Public Defender, I decided to take a position with the Chesapeake Commonwealth Attorney's Office as a Vice and Narcotics' prosecutor. I handled cases involving large scale drug distribution, possession charges, DUIs/DWIs, animal cruelty, violent crimes and civil forfeiture matters. During my time as a prosecutor, I trained detectives on how to be an effective expert witness and present the evidence needed to win the case. Now as a defense attorney, I use those same skills to zealously represent my clients, protect their interests and help keep them out of jail.
In addition, I am now a single mother and understand the hardships of divorce/separation on a family. I personally understand the importance of a competent and caring attorney that can help you through the trying times of divorce and related custody matters. It is a difficult time that no one should feel that they have to endure without someone in their corner fighting for them.

I highly recommend Cara. Hopefully I won't ever be in a situation that I need an attorney again, but if I do, she is the only attorney I would hire. I hired her for a criminal traffic matter and later, my divorce. She did an excellent job handling both. She took the time to explain things and made su...

This attorney is too busy talking about her past accomplishments. very open with other clients names, their situations and her achievements. seems to be very full of herself and too busy with horse to perform her duties just another oh look at me I was a part of the Commonwealth attorney in Norfolk a...
While I always welcome constructive criticism, the statements made here are inaccurate and do not reflect how I conduct myself or handle my clients' matters. I take attorney–client confidentiality very seriously and never disclose identifying details about cases without express permission. I am proud of my background, including my service as a former Commonwealth’s Attorney in Chesapeake, and I bring that experience to advocate strongly for my clients. My commitment to my clients and their cases remains a top priority, and I work diligently to ensure every client receives the attention and representation they deserve. If you were a client or have a legitimate concern, I encourage you to contact my office directly so we can address it appropriately.

I honestly would have been completely lost without Cara's representation. Not only did Cara fight for me in a totally professional manner, but also on a personal level. She was so passionate as if it were her own case she was representing. I can't thank her enough for the empowerment she provided me ...
Thank you! It was a delight working with you through such a difficult time in your life and I am thankful you trusted me to help you through this process. I truly wish you the best in your future endeavors!

If I could give zero stars, I would. Over the course of four years, I paid Cara Oxenham approximately $3,000, hoping for advocacy, direction, and resolution in my divorce and custody case. What I received was barely any legal action, long periods of silence, and an overwhelming amount of emotional an...
Due to the attorney/client privilege, I am unable to fully respond to the inaccuracies in this review; however, the same allegations were made to the Virginia State Bar and after the presentation of physical evidence to directly dispute these allegations, the Virginia State Bar found no misconduct.

I will never walk into another courtroom without Cara. I reached out to her about my husband's case and hired her on the spot. She immediately got to work filing motions the next day. She never let's a text go unanswered, she remembers small details that most would need repeated, has a great personal...
Thank you so much for your review! It was a pleasure to represent your husband and getting to know you and your family through the process. It is a highlight in my career when I see good people conquer their battles and succeed.
"I have known Ms Oxenham for years. We both worked as public defenders together, and have worked as opposing counse on matters. She is an excellent attorney and a hard worker."
"I was lucky enough to have cases against Ms. Oxenham when she was a prosecutor in Chesapeake. She was always fair and reasonable, open and approachable - always a pleasure to work with. Recently I was even luckier when she agreed to come work with me at my firm. The experience she brings to our clients facing criminal charges is invaluable. She works harder than just about anyone I know, is always prepared, and makes herself available when her clients need her. And, as someone who is experiencing life as a single mother, she can relate to our clients going through separation and divorce or a painful custody battle. Her genuine concern for our clients shows in everything she does. I endorse her without reservation."
