Professional, Kind, and Gets Results!

I highly recommend Cara. Hopefully I won't ever be in a situation that I need an attorney again, but if I do, she is the only attorney I would hire. I hired her for a criminal traffic matter and later, my divorce. She did an excellent job handling both. She took the time to explain things and made su...re I understood what was going on. She was easy to talk to and always looked out for my best interest. Cara, I cannot thank you enough for your expertise, guidance and support.

Wash out, Commonwealth Atterny

This attorney is too busy talking about her past accomplishments. very open with other clients names, their situations and her achievements. seems to be very full of herself and too busy with horse to perform her duties just another oh look at me I was a part of the Commonwealth attorney in Norfolk a...nd being represented by Commonwealth attorneys is never good. They don’t know what they’re doing.

While I always welcome constructive criticism, the statements made here are inaccurate and do not reflect how I conduct myself or handle my clients' matters. I take attorney–client confidentiality very seriously and never disclose identifying details about cases without express permission. I am proud of my background, including my service as a former Commonwealth’s Attorney in Chesapeake, and I bring that experience to advocate strongly for my clients. My commitment to my clients and their cases remains a top priority, and I work diligently to ensure every client receives the attention and representation they deserve. If you were a client or have a legitimate concern, I encourage you to contact my office directly so we can address it appropriately.

Angel in Disguise

I honestly would have been completely lost without Cara's representation. Not only did Cara fight for me in a totally professional manner, but also on a personal level. She was so passionate as if it were her own case she was representing. I can't thank her enough for the empowerment she provided me ...for not only being a wonderful attorney, but by someone who I would now consider a friend! Thank you from the bottom of my heart Cara. You made the last 1.5 years bearable by providing me with unwavering support, confidence, and helping spark the endurance I needed to see this separation/divorce to the end! God Bless you, Kayla and the rest of your team for being angels in disguise!!!!!

If you want to feel valued and protected this isn’t the lawyer for you.

If I could give zero stars, I would. Over the course of four years, I paid Cara Oxenham approximately $3,000, hoping for advocacy, direction, and resolution in my divorce and custody case. What I received was barely any legal action, long periods of silence, and an overwhelming amount of emotional an...d financial stress. In 2021, I retained Cara and provided all necessary divorce paperwork. When I physically returned over a year later, she still had not filed anything—and she only learned I had reconciled with my ex when I showed up in person. She had made no effort to follow up on the case in that time. Despite that, I chose to trust her again in 2023, hoping for a faster, more professional outcome. Unfortunately, nothing improved. The communication was incredibly poor, with weeks-long delays on emails and voicemails—even during emergencies involving my children. When I finally got through, I was often met with a rude, dismissive receptionist, and no urgency or support. When I asked for the Virginia State Bar’s contact info, I was told to “Google it.” After years of mismanagement, I was suddenly billed $900 more—with no clear explanation of where the original $3,000 had gone. When I finally expressed my frustration and said I’d be reaching out to the Bar, I was immediately dropped as a client, with a cold email and no resolution, no refund, and no accountability. I was then labeled aggressive instead of her team being accountable. If your case had been dragged out longer than needed with minimal urgency you’d be mad too right? This experience added tremendous mental and emotional stress to an already devastating and prolonged legal situation. My ex-husband has already dragged this process out for years—and instead of being supported, I was left to fight for basic communication and respect from the very person I hired to protect me. It’s exhausting, heartbreaking, and unfair. If you want to feel valued, respected, and properly represented as a client, this is not the law office for you. I am now searching for a new attorney who will actually show up, fight for me, and help my family move forward with a small amount of process left.

Due to the attorney/client privilege, I am unable to fully respond to the inaccuracies in this review; however, the same allegations were made to the Virginia State Bar and after the presentation of physical evidence to directly dispute these allegations, the Virginia State Bar found no misconduct.

Highly recommended

I will never walk into another courtroom without Cara. I reached out to her about my husband's case and hired her on the spot. She immediately got to work filing motions the next day. She never let's a text go unanswered, she remembers small details that most would need repeated, has a great personal...ity, is down to earth and easy to talk to, I mean I honestly couldn't say enough about this woman. She's definitely a people person but as an added bonus an animal person too! She was highly recommended to me by multiple people before and after I hired her. She also has a great rapport with the commonwealth attorneys office, and is heard and respected in every courtroom. Look no further, if you need representation you've found it in Cara Oxenham.

Thank you so much for your review! It was a pleasure to represent your husband and getting to know you and your family through the process. It is a highlight in my career when I see good people conquer their battles and succeed.

"I was lucky enough to have cases against Ms. Oxenham when she was a prosecutor in Chesapeake. She was always fair and reasonable, open and approachable - always a pleasure to work with. Recently I was even luckier when she agreed to come work with me at my firm. The experience she brings to our clients facing criminal charges is invaluable. She works harder than just about anyone I know, is always prepared, and makes herself available when her clients need her. And, as someone who is experiencing life as a single mother, she can relate to our clients going through separation and divorce or a painful custody battle. Her genuine concern for our clients shows in everything she does. I endorse her without reservation."
