Cortland manages the Richmond, Virginia office of Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig, a national law firm with offices in multiple states and foreign countries. Prior to joining the firm, Cortland practiced with a prominent international Am Law 100 law firm. And in 2007, the Attorney General of Virginia selected him to serve as special counsel to represent the state in certain cases. The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry Commissioner has also appointed him as the state’s special counsel for the purpose of collecting monies owed to employees.
In addition, Cortland served as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond School of Law for almost eight years, where he taught first-year students. He has also authored various publications, including serving as a contributor to the Tort Law Desk Reference: A Fifty-State Compendium. His observations on politics have also appeared in POLITICO and in the Daily Telegraph (London, England), Aamulehti (Finland), Washington Examiner, and Richmond Times-Dispatch newspapers.
Cortland received his J.D. from the Washington and Lee University School of Law. He also graduated with high distinction from the University of Virginia, where he received his undergraduate degree.
