I cannot recommend Joseph T. Brown based on my experience with him as my divorce attorney. I found Mr. Brown inadequately prepared and ineffective in representing my interests. Most importantly, I do not believe he adequately advised me about my financial rights and options under my prenuptial agr...eement before I entered into my divorce settlement. I also was not adequately advised about the meaning and long-term consequences of several provisions in my Property Settlement Agreement (PSA). Some of those provisions involve financial issues that continue to affect me many years later. Had I understood then what I understand today about my prenuptial agreement and the PSA, I would have approached the settlement very differently and sought a second legal opinion. Prospective clients should also be aware of Mr. Brown's documented disciplinary history. According to the Virginia State Bar, effective March 31, 2022, Joseph Taylor Brown received a public reprimand with terms for violating the professional rule governing conflict of interest. Mr. Brown appealed, and the Supreme Court of Virginia subsequently affirmed the judgment. Based on my personal experience, I strongly recommend obtaining a second opinion before signing a settlement involving significant assets, a prenuptial agreement, or complicated financial provisions.
