Hassan Minhaj Ahmad

Hassan is the founder and principal of the HMA Law Firm.  Licensed to practice in Maryland and Virginia, fluent or proficient in eight languages besides English, known and respected among his peers for his knowledge of the law, research and writing ability, trial skills, and having earned a reputation among his peers as the “go-to” attorney in matters of immigration law, Hassan is an aggressive, dynamic and knowledgeable lawyer who passionately believes in fighting for his clients.

Hassan maintains an of counsel relationship with the Law Offices of Omar Baloch, PLLC in Raleigh, NC.  He is fluent in Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi, and is able to speak, read, and write all these languages in their native scripts. He is also proficient in Spanish, Arabic, French, and Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese. This gives him the ability to relate to his clients in a unique way.  A firm believer in unity in diversity, he has advised nationals of 115 countries around the world, and counting.

Hassan has 14 years of experience in immigration and criminal defense, and is especially familiar with the immigration consequences of criminal activity.  He regularly counsels his own clients and defense attorneys on the immigration consequences of pleas and convictions for their non-citizen clients. He has lectured before Virginia defense attorneys on the topic, creating social media groups to better train defense lawyers. He is a regular invited speaker and writer on various topics related to immigration, and is frequently quoted in local and national media.

Hassan holds a law degree from Tulane Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana. While in law school, he clerked for a high-profile New Orleans firm where he learned and was trained in a considerable variety of legal fields, ranging from personal injury to commercial litigation to medical malpractice. 

Prior to his career as a lawyer, Hassan was a successful and motivational teacher. He taught Urdu and Hindi at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC and also taught high school classes in religion and law. He maintained a career as a real estate sales agent in North Carolina.

Hassan was born and raised in North Carolina and now resides in Virginia with his wife and children.
