Katharine Wesley Maddox

Katharine Maddox has practiced family law for more than 20 years, handling every stage of separation and divorce proceedings—from negotiation and litigation to alternative dispute resolution. As a Virginia Supreme Court–certified mediator, she routinely guides clients through collaborative law processes, always seeking solutions that serve the family’s future. Whether addressing complex asset division, child custody arrangements, or financial support determinations, Katharine approaches each matter with professionalism, respect and a commitment to rational settlement whenever feasible.

An active leader within the family law community, Katharine holds Fellowship in three distinguished organizations. She serves as First Vice President of the USA Chapter of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL), a global association of peer-nominated practitioners. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), a selective body of the nation’s most trusted family law practitioners. Most notably, she belongs to the American College of Family Trial Lawyers (ACFTL), an invitation-only group of 100 trial attorneys recognized for exceptional performance in complex family law trials. Her peers and clients alike have honored her with inclusion on Washingtonian’s list of best family law attorneys, recognition in Best Lawyers in America, and top ratings such as “Superb, 10 out of 10” from AVVO. Regional publications have named her a “Super Lawyer,” a “Top Lawyer” by Northern Virginia Magazine and one of the “Legal Elite” by Virginia Business Magazine.

Katharine has contributed to the field through writing and speaking. Since her first publication in 2004, she has co-authored the Virginia chapter of an international family law treatise and penned articles on topics such as parental alienation, custody relocation and best practices for virtual law practices. She regularly addresses audiences at national and international conferences on subjects ranging from intra-state and international child relocation under the Hague Convention to enforcement of custody orders, the Uniform Child Custody and Enforcement Act, and virtual law office management. She has co-organized symposiums in New York City and Quebec City on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.

A graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A. in psychology), Katharine earned her J.D., with honors, from The George Washington University, where she chaired the Academic Integrity Committee. Outside the office, she devotes herself to her family, cares for two rescue dogs and enjoys exploring new recipes in the kitchen.
