Matthew J. Engler is a Maryland workers’ compensation and personal injury attorney and Partner at Berman Sobin Gross LLP. Based in Frederick, Maryland, Matt represents injured workers, accident victims, and their families throughout Maryland in workers’ compensation claims, personal injury cases, motor vehicle accidents, and other injury matters.

During his legal career, Matt has represented more than two thousand injured clients and has handled cases ranging from workplace injuries and occupational claims to serious automobile accidents and complex personal injury litigation. He has also successfully represented injured workers before Maryland’s appellate courts, helping establish favorable results involving important issues of Maryland workers’ compensation law.

Experience Representing Maryland’s Injured Workers

Matt graduated from Georgetown University and earned his law degree from The George Washington University Law School.

After law school, he served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable David Boynton in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland. The clerkship provided Matt with firsthand experience in the judicial decision-making process and Maryland trial practice.

Matt then joined the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office as an Assistant State’s Attorney. As a prosecutor, he investigated and prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases, developing substantial courtroom, litigation, negotiation, and trial experience.

In 2015, Matt joined Berman Sobin Gross as an associate attorney, focusing his practice on representing injured people in Maryland workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. He became a Partner with the firm in January 2022.

Matt’s workers’ compensation practice includes claims involving workplace accidents, occupational injuries and diseases, permanent disability, disputed medical treatment, wage-loss benefits, and appeals. His personal injury practice includes motor vehicle collisions and other negligence claims resulting in serious injuries.

Maryland Workers’ Compensation Appellate Experience

In addition to representing clients before the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission and Maryland trial courts, Matt has successfully argued workers’ compensation cases before Maryland’s appellate courts.

His appellate experience includes Montgomery County v. Rios, 244 Md. App. 629 (2020), a reported Maryland appellate decision addressing the five-year limitations period applicable to the reopening and modification of workers’ compensation awards. Matt wrote the appellate brief and personally argued the case on behalf of the injured worker.

Matt also prevailed in Stine v. Montgomery County, 237 Md. App. 374 (2017), another successful Maryland appellate workers’ compensation case that resulted in flexibility in calculating an injured workers' earning capacity.

He also successfully represented the claimant in Prince George’s County v. Zonn, 2018 Md. App. LEXIS 1153 (2018), an appellate workers’ compensation case before Maryland’s Court of Special Appeals.

These cases reflect Matt’s broader commitment to understanding not only the practical aspects of workers’ compensation claims, but also the statutes, appellate decisions, and evolving legal principles that govern the rights of injured Maryland workers.

Recognition and Professional Commitment

Matt has been recognized by The National Trial Lawyers Top 40 Under 40 and has received additional recognition for his work representing injured people and Maryland workers’ compensation claimants.

Before entering private practice, Matt served both his community and the public as a state prosecutor and volunteer firefighter. Those experiences shaped his approach to representing clients: prepare thoroughly, communicate directly, and take responsibility when someone is depending on you.
