Matthew Anselm Sodaro Esworthy

Matthew A.S. Esworthy is a partner in the Firm’s litigation department. He concentrates on general civil and criminal litigation, including land use and zoning, white collar criminal defense, complex commercial litigation, cyber law, privacy law, estates and trust litigation, partnership disputes, employment law, and appeals. Mr. Esworthy has achieved favorable results in a number of high profile civil cases:

• Defending a commercial building owner in a regulatory zoning lawsuit brought by Baltimore City;
• Defending prominent local restaurant in a land use dispute;
• Defending a personal representative and trustee in a complex multi-million dollar lawsuit;
• Defending a firearms designer in a commercial lawsuit;
• Defending a law firm in a multi-million dollar defamation/invasion of privacy lawsuit brought by a public official;
• Representing minority shareholders of a Fortune 500 company in a complex shareholder dispute; and
• Defending internationally-renowned recording artists, producers and record labels in a civil conspiracy/intentional tort lawsuit.

Mr. Esworthy has also defended individuals targeted for criminal prosecution by federal and state authorities involving a wide variety of criminal charges:

• Defending a prominent businessman against federal antitrust (bid rigging) charges;
• Defending a Washington D.C. construction company against federal criminal conspiracy and fraud charges;
• Defending a Virginia based home construction business against federal bank and mortgage fraud charges;
• Defending numerous federal and state cyber crime prosecutions; and
• Defending and representing targets in election law frauds prosecutions.

Before entering private practice, Mr. Esworthy served as Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Joseph F. Murphy, Jr. (Ret.), former Chief Judge of the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland. 
Mr. Esworthy is an active member of numerous bar associations and non-profits, including the American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section; Baltimore based non-profits Civic Works, Inc. and The Clarence H. “Du” Burns Memorial Fund, Inc.; and Penn State University.
