TRUSTED, WELL-RESPECTED AND EXPERIENCED ADVOCATE WITH A CUSTOMIZED APPROACH FOR EACH CLIENT

Katherine Kole Thompson has been a resident of Harford County for her entire life. She attended Harford Day School and the John Carroll School. Katie completed her undergraduate degrees in biology and psychology at Boston College in 1990, graduating cum laude and as a Scholar of the College. While at Boston College, she competed on the varsity swimming team and completed the Boston Marathon in 1990. Returning closer to home to attend law school at the University of Maryland, Katie graduated from law school in 1993 and was admitted to the Maryland Bar that same year. While attending law school full-time, Katie was a student attorney representing juvenile offenders, served as associate editor for The Business Lawyer Law Journal, and worked as a law clerk for two law firms.

After graduating from law school, Katie worked for one year as the law clerk to the Honorable William O. Carr, Administrative Judge of the Circuit Court for Harford County. This allowed her to work in the Courthouse, become familiar with court personnel, and obtain first-hand knowledge of the local court’s inner workings. When Katie finished her clerkship with Judge Carr, she began her private practice in Bel Air, MD.

Katie works in the areas of family law (divorce, custody, visitation and child support), criminal and traffic defense, and personal injury (auto accidents and medical malpractice). She also prepares wills, living wills and powers of attorney. Katie is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia (inactive) and the federal court system.

Katie served on the Board of Directors of the Harford County Bar Foundation 1995-2015 (President from 1998-99). She served on the Board of Managers for Harford County YMCA (1998-99). Katie served on the Harford County Bar Association Executive Council from 2004-07. Katie currently serves on the Family Law Advisory Committee and the Bench/Bar Committee for the Harford County Bar Association. In 2015 Katie co-founded the Harford County Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association (President 2015-17). Katie is a statewide board member of the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland from 2018 – present. She is also President Elect of the Harford County Bar Association for 2018-19.

Katie and her husband, Aaron, live in Harford County with their two daughters.

Katie should be your first choice if you’re looking for a divorce lawyer.
During my separation, I met with Katie multiple times on a consulting basis. She was extremely patient and helpful, explaining all the details I could expect based on different situations. I hired her to represent me during my divorce, and I am so glad I did. She not only represented my best interests, she helped me be stronger and more assertive during the process. Katie is the consummate professional. She understands the difficulties, both legal and emotional, inherent in a divorce and will patiently support you during the process. If you listen to her, you won’t go wrong.

If you need a family law attorney ... look no further
I have been using Katie for custody and child support issues since January of 2014. One cannot find a more capable family law attorney to work on his/her behalf. Two of the areas that allowed Katie to be so effective in my case are her knowledge of the court system and the social services apparatus in Harford County. She is very familiar with all of the judges and masters who hear custody cases, including their styles and likely responses to matters before them. In addition, she knows many of the social services administrators and social workers who interview the parents and conduct home studies. Being familiar with these personnel and processes is what makes Katie especially effective as she can advise her clients on what to expect and how one should put his/her “best foot forward.” In this way, she gives her clients reasonable expectations considering the circumstances. Anything extra she achieves is a pleasant surprise. In my particular situation, she was able to win sole legal and physical custody for me as well as child support payments. She further advised how to work with the Office of Child Support Enforcement to enhance the possibility of the non-custodial parent making the required payments. When the non-custodial parent mounted a legal challenge to the original court order three and a half years later, Katie developed a unique, two-fold strategy for responding. First, she generated and filed a response to the action as if I would have to return to court. A prudent approach, for sure. Then, she filed a separate motion asking the court to dismiss the non-custodial parent’s action. Using legal language, she basically told the court the suit was frivolous and without merit, citing the reasons. So a court date was set for a new trial but, almost two months before I was to appear, the court issued a decision on her request for dismissal of the action. To my distinct pleasure, the court agreed to dismiss the suit, upholding the original custody order. I do not know if these results are typical in custody cases but, as participants in these types of cases, it is important for parents to understand that disputes involving children are ongoing and will never be fully resolved until their children reach the age of majority. Until that happens, however, having someone like Katie Thompson on their side is a must. A Grateful Parent
