Dr. Mahemud Eshtu Tekuya is the Founding Attorney of Mame Bati Law, LLC. He is an attorney and legal scholar whose practice focuses primarily on federal immigration law.
As an immigrant himself, Dr. Tekuya understands firsthand the uncertainty, hardship, and emotional toll of the immigration process. Having experienced separation from his family, he is deeply committed to helping individuals and families navigate complex immigration laws with compassion, respect for human dignity, strategic advocacy, the utmost professionalism, and dedicated legal representation.
Dr. Tekuya brings more than 13 years of combined experience in legal practice, advanced legal education, academic research, teaching, and public policy. In addition to leading Mame Bati Law, LLC, he serves as Of Counsel to Amsale Aberra Law PLLC, where he works closely with the firm's founding attorney on complex immigration and humanitarian matters, including legal research, litigation strategy, trial preparation, and the drafting of briefs, pleadings, motions, and appellate filings. He also trains and supervises paralegals and law clerks, promoting professionalism and excellence in legal practice.
Before entering private practice, Dr. Tekuya served as a Teaching and Research Assistant at Oregon State University, a Legal Analyst at International Legal and Business Services Group, an intern at the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) in Washington, D.C., and a Lecturer in Law in Ethiopia.
Dr. Tekuya holds a Doctor of Juridical Science (J.S.D.), a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in U.S. Law, a Master of Science in Water Resources Policy and Management, and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). His academic achievements include the Award of Excellence for J.S.D. Achievement from McGeorge School of Law, the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award from Oregon State University, and the Gold Medal for Academic Excellence in Law from Dire Dawa University.
A published legal scholar, Dr. Tekuya's work has appeared in the Fordham International Law Journal, the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law, the European Journal of International Law, the Environmental Law Reporter, and the Natural Resources Journal. He is also the author of The Nile in Legal and Political Perspective: Between Change and Continuity (Brill, 2023).
Dr. Tekuya is licensed to practice law in Washington State. His immigration practice is limited to federal law nationwide, and non-immigration legal services are limited to matters arising under Washington State law.
