also known as Monty Crawford
Monty Crawford has over twenty-five years of experience in high-stakes, complex business litigation and arbitration. As a former litigation partner at DLA Piper, the world’s largest law firm, he has represented individuals, local companies, and Fortune 500 companies in disputes throughout Maryland, the United States, and globally. He has collected in excess of $250 million on behalf of his clients in business disputes, and has represented clients in over twenty-five states and ten countries in both federal and state court. He is a trial lawyer with extensive courtroom experience. As such, he is able to provide “big law” expertise and experience without the costs associated with a national firm.
Monty Crawford is able to advise clients on the legal issues and implications of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, including contractual, regulatory, insurance, and commercial issues. Monty remains up to date on the latest orders, regulatory requirements, and legal issues relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is well-positioned both to advise clients in these uncertain times, and to provide effective representation in COVID-19 related regulatory and litigation disputes.
Monty has represented companies and individuals in cases involving breach of contract, fraud, insurance disputes, real estate disputes, breach of warranty, employment disputes, shareholder disputes, defamation, custody and divorce, estate disputes, construction matters, class actions, wrongful death, discrimination, wrongful termination, environmental matters, and intellectual property issues.
Monty also has extensive experience in helping companies and individuals who are subject to criminal or civil investigation by state or federal authorities. He has represented clients under investigation or indictment by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Office of Foreign Asset Control, the Maryland Attorney General, the Maryland Insurance Commissioner, the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission, and various consumer protection agencies. He has had great success both in negotiating favorable resolutions to investigations and in litigating against the government.
Monty is one of the leading experts in Maryland on international legal disputes. He serves as the Chair of the International Law Committee of the Maryland State Bar Association, and has lectured on international litigation at the University of Maryland Law School. He has represented companies in both international arbitration, international litigation, and international investigations in over ten countries on five continents.
Monty Crawford’s goal in any business dispute is to obtain the best result for the client while minimizing both the financial costs and the business disruption which accompany litigation. He is able to provide twenty-five years of “big law” experience and expertise without the cost of retaining a national firm. He works closely with his clients to understand their business and their problems and to work with them to obtain the optimal result. For cases that cannot be settled, Monty also is an experienced trial lawyer who will fight to protect the interests of his clients.
