  1. Criminal defense
    95%
I represent defendants in state and federal court on every charge from drunk driving and shoplifting to murder. I handle cases at both the trial and appeal level.

    40 years

  2. Contracts and agreements
    5%
I have extensive experience with negotiating and drafting contracts. I take particular pride in writing contracts in plain English so that the parties understand exactly what they are agreeing to. I also handle contract litigation.

    42 years, 50 cases

I think that one of the most important functions of any lawyer is to keep clients informed and aware of all developments in their cases.  I pride myself on being able to explain the most complicated legal concepts in a way that anyone can understand.  I return calls promptly and keep my clients informed of all developments in their cases.

I fight hard for all my clients.  Not all cases can be won, however, and not every defendant wants to fight the charges.  In those cases I believe that it is most important to get to know each client as an individual and to convey that understanding to the judge.  No one is defined by their worst acts.  I make sure to present a complete and well-rounded picture of the client so that the judge sees a complete human being and not just someone that made a bad choice.

I teach Evidence at American University Law School and am an instructor at the Harvard Law School trial advocacy workshop.

Outside of work I have a lot of cultural interests.  I am an avid theater-goer,  attend the ballet and concerts, watch sports, and spend a lot of time with my dog.

A Master in her Craft!
Cheryl Stein is in my opinion one of the best lawyers in DC. Not only does she have a great deal of knowledge in regards to the Law, but her court room presence is amazing. Ms. Stein was extremely helpful and was always professional while handling my case. I was definitely impressed by her preparation and her command of the court room. She adapted as things changed in the case and put up a great defense. I would highly recommend Cheryl Stein to anybody in need of a lawyer. You honestly couldn't pick a better lawyer.

Helps a legal novice.
Cheryl Stein has been my legal professor of sorts for close to a decade. As a journalist I am always in search of someone who knows the law, case law and the real world implications of a ruling. Cheryl is that and more. One of her most important attributes is an ability to take complicated legal doctrine and explain it in such a way that I get it, no small feat. She also is fantastic at looking at both sides of an issue and offering me points and counterpoints so I have a well-rounded view of whatever subject we are talking about. On the rare occasion when she doesn't know something immediately Cheryl can research legal cases quickly. She is a must in my Rolodex. I can only imagine the level of professionalism and effort she puts forth for her clients.

One of the finest criminal defense lawyers in Washington, DC
I highly recommend attorney Cheryl Stein. Ms. Stein is an excellent criminal defense lawyer. She is smart, thorough, and is very knowledgeable about the intricacies of the District of Columbia Superior court system. I was extremely satisfied with the way in which she handled my case and represented me during court proceedings. Attorney Stein was always available for me. She answered every question I asked, and explained complicated legal jargon in a way that I could fully understand. I certainly hope that I am never in a situation where I need criminal defense representation, but if I ever am, attorney Stein will be the first person that I call.

A Must-See Defense Lawyer in Washington,D.C. for Criminal Lawsuits!
To Whom it may concern: Cheryl D. Stein, Esq. of Washington, D.C.has been representing me with my criminal and civil law suits since 2009. My ongoing experience with Cheryl is one of high professionalism. With Cheryl's extensive and expert knowledge of U.S. Federal laws, she is the definitive person to hire with sensitive criminal matters. Her recall of federal case law, and particularly the US Constitution and Amendments is superb. From her vast courtroom experience, she knows how to read the prosecution and is an expert in dealing with courtroom judges. I highly recommend Cheryl for anyone who has suffered with a criminal indictment. Thank you so much Cheryl for all your hard work and diligence with respect to my cases!

poor communication, rude and disrespectful
Very rude and disrespectful, undermined the attorney client relationship the entire time. Additionally made very amateur mistakes so much so I had to hire a new attorney. Thousands of dollars later I found that another lawyer for half the cost was much better.
Response from Cheryl Stein August 3, 2022
There is nothing in this comment that is true. Unfortunately, due to lawyer-client privilege, it is not possible to provide any details about the representation. Unscrupulous clients know this and take advantage of the situation to spread defamatory comments. It is one of the hazards of the profession. I will just say this: Ex-client refers to another lawyer who was "much better". The truth is that the client accepted a resolution that I had negotiated. The next lawyer just came in and piggy-backed on my work.

"Cheryl is a good writer, an excellent trial attorney – and a quick study. Last year I referred her a prisoner who had filed a 2255 motion without the assistance of an attorney. The motion, which alleged that his previous attorney had been ineffective, was scheduled for a hearing within a few weeks. Cheryl was not only able to prepare for the hearing on short notice – but was able to win the 2255 motion. A testament to her skill as a trial advocate. Cheryl’s legal memorandums are well written, clear, and convincing"
