I used Mr Egoville to settle my uncle's estate since he wrote his will. That was a mistake. If you think you'll use him, get a second opinion. He sent me a commitment letter which I signed that only used half of the rate schedule that PA considers fair and reasonable. Two thirds of the estate were transfer on death assets which did not require a lawyer. In fact, other than establishing the value of the mutual fund and adding the value to PA's inheritance tax forms, my sister and I dealt with the legal matters of 2/3rds of the estate.
When I met with him, I explained that I was familiar with going to the courthouse and registering the will as I dealt with my mother's will the previous year. He gruffly asked, "Who's administering this will you or me" rather than explaining the difference between the roles of ADM and EXE.
So I road to the courthouse with him. Halfway there, he had forgotten his checkbook and was going to go back to his office had I not brought mine along. Going home, he thought he forgot to get the short certificates and I had to tell him he got them. Some notary work needed done and he insisted on going with me, although I could have gotten it done for free at my bank.
When I found out about the problem with his fee schedule, I addressed it with him, but he refused to negotiate talking about all the hours he had already spent. Again he became defensive and I knew arguing with him was useless.
Most of his billable hours were spent doing clerical work and making trips to the bank. When I became aware of what was happening, I contacted two lawyers, one on line and one local. Both said his charges were excessive and the local lawyer told me how to seek relief, via the bar association. If that didn't work, he could be sued over the commissions. However, from a practical standpoint, suing him made little sense over $6-7,000.
Unfortunately, the bar never got back to be when I filed a complaint and Mr Egoville continued to harass me about signing off on the estate so I finally gave up.
Never again will I deal with this attorney but it wasn't so bad. I did find a local lawyer that I have the utmost confidence in and I learned who wasn't going to handle my estate, which is considerably larger than my uncles. I highly recommend finding someone else for your estate planning and will administration.
