The city of Thomasville Alabama and the Thomasville Alabama police department are the subject of a lawsuit filed on behalf of a juvenile alleging that the minor’s rights were violated by the police d ... epartment when they released his name in their police blotter in apparent violation of state law. The lawsuit, filed by Attorney Martin Weinberg in October of this year, alleges in Hudson v City of Thomasville & City of Thomasville Police Department that Jared Hudson, a minor at the time, was arrested on April 7, 2010 and charged as a juvenile. The department then released the child’s name and charges to the Thomasville Times which published the information on April 29, 2010, which resulted in his expulsion from school on August 31, 2010. However, the suit claims, this was done in violation of state law which requires juvenile records to remain confidential unless the child in question is charged as an adult, which Jared was not. The law goes on to make it a class A misdemeanor for anyone who knowingly permits the release of information identifying a child by name who is under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. The suit is requesting an unspecified sum to compensate for the violation of Jared’s rights and damages caused due to the apparently illegal release of his information to the media and his school and claims that this isn’t the first time the department has violated the law in this way. Information on Jared’s arrest listed online indicates that he was charged with the manufacture of an unspecified controlled substance but does not include information on the ultimate disposition of his case.
