Mitchell S Kaplan

Mitchell S. Kaplan has been an attorney at Zarwin Baum for his entire legal career and is the firm’s managing shareholder.  He primarily focuses his practice in the area of casualty defense, particularly trucking and transportation, liquor liability, commercial property liability, professional liability and insurance coverage.  He is retained by an impressive list of insurance carriers and third-party claim administrators to represent their insureds.  Kaplan takes great pride in his problem solving ability and often consults with firm clients and attorneys for innovative approaches to legal and non-legal issues that may arise.

In addition, Kaplan is often selected by attorneys and insurance carriers to serve as mediator or arbitrator.  He also regularly serves as a Judge Pro Tempore and an arbitrator for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

During Kaplan’s tenure as managing shareholder, the firm has tripled its number of attorneys, added many additional practice groups, expanded its offices in Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey and North New Jersey and opened satellite offices in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware.  Furthermore, Kaplan has spearheaded Zarwin Baum’s community and charitable initiatives that last year raised charitable donations in excess of $100,000.

As managing shareholder, Kaplan’s goal is to familiarize potential Zarwin clients with the high-level of skill and expertise possessed by Zarwin attorneys.  He has also instituted a firm philosophy to maintain the highest level of economic efficiency on behalf of the Firm’s clients.

Kaplan has annually been named one of Pennsylvania’s “Super Lawyers” by Philadelphia Magazine since 2006, an honor received by only five percent of Pennsylvania lawyers each year.  He has also been profiled in the Philadelphia Business Journal and featured in articles appearing in the Legal Intelligencer and USA Today.

Kaplan is a founding member and leader of the Themis Advocates Group, a national network of elite insurance defense litigators. Themis provides Zarwin with a national footprint, high-level educational opportunities and an enhanced means of communication for its insurance and self-insured defense clients. Kaplan has been a regular presenter on varied insurance topics at Themis Conferences around the country.

Kaplan has served on the faculty at Temple University as an adjunct professor in the master’s program at the School of Communications where he teaches “Legal Issues in Communications Management.”  He has lectured on numerous insurance and casualty issues for the National Business Institute, HMS Continuing Legal Education and insurance carrier and claim administrators across the county.
