Could have lost my business all because of a mistake

In 2006 I made haste to catch a flight at our local airport failing to recall that my handgun used for protection was in the bottom of my carry on bag. I was taken into custody and fully cooperated with the questioning by the local authorities and the FBI and did so without legal representation. To... cooperate when such an error was made seemed to be the absolute right thing to do but I learned that when you do not have a legal advocate present, even the authorities that were caught up in the situation had difficulties recording what my actual responses were. Was it intentional still remains a question. The point is that it does not matter when you are staring down a felony charge with a penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and the probable loss of licenses I needed to operate my business. I met Brian Collins socially but never thought that I would personally be needing his expertise. I went from the prospect of financial ruin, possible imprisonment, severe fines to all charges dropped . This did not happen immediately as the attorney general stated that "intent" was not a factor in charges being fully carried out. It was a difficult period of several months of negotiations and careful work on my lawyer's part along with having to read my daily argument about my case to him. I was prepared to go to federal court but because of the results that Brian obtained for me, I was able to circumvent those charges which were a minimum of $50,000, have nothing possibly impairing my licenses in the future and to get back to work. I will also give credit to God as well, it's only fair.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
