Helped VAWA beneficiary obtain a Green Card
Jan 08, 2008OUTCOME: Green Card Approved
In this case, we represented a foreign national from India whose U.S. citizen husband married her in India but never followed through with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (US CIS) to comple ... te her green card processing. Soon thereafter, through his friends and family in India, he physically and emotionally harassed her. Eventually he obtained a judgment for an ex-parte divorce in the US after lying to the court about her residential address. We first helped her obtain a visitor’s visa to enter the United States, thereafter we helped her demonstrate to the family court that the ex-parte divorce was obtained fraudulently (thereby setting it aside), and finally we were able to convince the US CIS that our client was a victim of a crime under Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and therefore eligible for a green card. Client is now in process of applying for her U.S. Citizenship.
