Couple Living at Home: Husband Has Dementia
N/AOUTCOME: Successfully keeping couple at home.
I brought in an Alzheimer's coach to teach the wife and children how to interact with the husband / father in a productive, meaningful way. Now there is much less frustration in the home and more harm ... ony. Parents have both put in place fiduciary documents that will let the children take over finances and health care decision-making when the parents need that extra help. As the parents need more assistance to stay at home, we will tap into Medicaid and Veterans funding to bring in further services. If one of the children would like to become a full-time caregiver, we will draft a contract between her and her parents that will permit her to receive some income for her efforts so that she has the freedom to quit her job and care for her parents. In the end, the parents will have stayed at home for much longer than would have been possible without supports, and the children will be able to play appropriate supporting roles. We will have preserved as much of the parents' assets as possible while providing them with the best care they can afford.
