Jun 01, 2014OUTCOME: Multi-million dollar settlement
Patient was admitted to a telemetry unit with shortness of breath and placed on oxygen. Defendant Nurse unhooked the monitoring equipment and oxygen to allow Patient to give himself a sponge bath. De ... fendant Nurse left the room for an extended period of time, purportedly to see other patients. When Patient's family arrived for a visit, they found him unconscious and unclothed. Defendant Nurse nurse was summoned. When she finally arrived, a code blue was called and Patient was revived after 8 minutes of aggressive resuscitation. It was determined that Patient had stopped breathing and, because he was unhooked from the monitoring equipment, no one was alerted to his respiratory distress. Due to the extended period of oxygen deprivation, Patient suffered irreversible brain damage.
