Christopher Staszak brings to Goldberg Segalla valuable experience leading complex, nationally publicized investigations in Congress, with the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) and with the New York State Attorney General’s Office. Chris’ experience with high-stakes federal and state investigations allows him to provide valuable insight to clients facing the substantial risks associated with government enforcement, litigation, and inquiries from regulators, along with companies in need of an internal investigation. His bipartisan experience in all three branches of the federal government, in the highest levels of state government, and with crisis communications places him in a unique position to advise clients facing regulatory, legislative, and media scrutiny.
Immediately prior to joining Goldberg Segalla, Chris was a Senior Investigative Counsel with SIGAR, where he held a Top Secret security clearance and investigated allegations of corruption, fraud, and waste in government spending, and money laundering related to reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. He was also a Senior Investigative Counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he investigated publicly traded companies in the pharmaceutical, financial services, and consumer products industries. He led the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the recall of millions of bottles of pediatric medicine, the merger of two major financial services companies during the financial crisis, and alleged misconduct in the mortgage lending industry. As an Assistant Attorney General with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, he served in the Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau, which investigates and litigates false advertising, deceptive business practices, and various forms of fraud against consumers. He began his legal career as a clerk for Judge Lawrence E. Kahn in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. Following his clerkship, Chris was an Assistant Counsel to the Governor of New York.
In private practice, Chris worked in the Washington, D.C. office of a prominent international law firm, where he represented clients before Congress and federal agencies, and provided strategic communications and media relations advice. Prior to practicing law, Chris served as the Press Secretary of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and as the Vice President of Corporate Communications for a major Manhattan-based financial services firm. This experience allows Chris to provide clients with exceptional insight into the manner in which an effective crisis response strategy can reduce exposure to reputational damage and negative coverage in the media.
