Tauseef’s judicial experience includes working for the Hon. Leonard D. Wexler, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York in Central Islip, NY. There, he researched and drafted bench memoranda, orders, and letter opinions in both criminal and civil cases. He also prepared for cases and participated regularly in court proceedings, reviewed and analyzed habeas corpus petitions involving inadequate assistance of counsel, and reviewed case files and assisted the Judge with a variety of matters that came before the court.
Tauseef was a full-time Legal Extern in the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, VA, where he reviewed granted patents in reissue and reexamination post-grant proceedings. At the CRU, he drafted non-final office actions establishing the USPTO’s legal position on a range of patentability issues including subject matter, novelty, obviousness, claim interpretation, and adequacy of enablement; researched prior art and proposed positions based on findings; and managed a project correlating the post-grant proceedings that occurred at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) with those that occurred at the CRU to determine trends in patent litigation.
At the USPTO, he completed the patent examination training program covering patent systems; role of the patent examiner and flow of an application; basic requirements to file and formalities; claim interpretation; 35 USC 101; 35 USC 112 (a); 35 USC 112 (b) and (d); prior art rejections; 35 USC 102 (AIA and pre-AIA); 35 USC 103; patent classification; planning a search; restriction practice; and double patenting.
As a Legal Intern for the Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property Clinic at Hofstra Law School in Hempstead, NY, Tauseef provided transactional assistance to small businesses and startups with a particular focus on intellectual property issues that arise in the earliest stages of venture formation. He also performed a patentability analysis for a startup company’s sports technology; researched prior art and patent claim construction, focusing on statutory standards of novelty and obviousness; obtained trademark for a small business; and researched registered trademarks and submitted responses with the USPTO. Tauseef also drafted a music licensing term agreement for Hofstra University’s student-run record label.
