Steven E. Shumer has handled ground breaking cases. He has been interviewed and quoted in various publications including the New York Law Journal and Long Island Newsday. Mr. Shumer has authored a monthly legal column that appeared in over 25 local newspapers across Long Island and has participated in lectures to educate the public on matters involving divorce and family law. On multiple occasions Mr. Shumer was nominated for “Best of Long Island” under the category of “Divorce Lawyer.”
Attorney Steven E. Shumer has handled thousands of cases ranging from divorce/separation actions, same sex divorce, uncontested divorces, divorce mediation, pre and post nuptial agreements, post divorce enforcement proceedings, custody matters, support and visitation cases to multi-million dollar property distribution issues. In the family law arena he has handled everything from custody, support and visitation cases to order of protection matters, relocation issues and even cases of child abduction.
As a divorce mediation attorney, Mr. Shumer's focus is always upon reaching an amicable and consensual settlement that satisfies the concerns of both parties and their family so that they can leave the process in a civil relationship moving forward.
Mr. Shumer’s first goal in a divorce or family law matter is to move the parties toward settlement of a case rather than litigation. However, there are times when settlement is not an option. In such situations, Mr. Shumer and the attorneys at Berger, Fischoff, Shumer, Wexler & Goodman, LLP, have extensive trial experience. Throughout his more than twenty five years of practice, Mr. Shumer has been involved in a variety of trials in the courts of Long Island and the five boroughs of New York city.
Mr. Shumer, graduated from Brandeis University (cum laude) in 1989. He received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1992, where he was a member of the Hofstra Labor Law Journal. Mr. Shumer is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and was admitted to the Bars of the State of New York and Connecticut, ultimately settling his practice within Nassau County, Suffolk County, Queens County and the surrounding areas. On October 1,2013, Steven E. Shumer became the president of the 1st Resource Chapter of BNI, a worldwide networking group for business professionals.
In addition to his respected position in the divorce/mediation and family law communities, Attorney Steven E. Shumer is proud of the firm’s position as one of the premier bankruptcy firms on Long Island (representing both debtors and creditors in all aspects of bankruptcy law from Chapter 7 and 13 filings to more complex Chapter 11 filings) and one of the most respected real estate firms in the area (handling residential and commercial closings as well as representing numerous banks/financial institutions).
