REFERRED US TO A CORRUPT ATTORNEY

A family member and I consulted with Shalom Schwartz about a conflict we were having with another attorney. Schwartz then referred us to Michael B. Schulman, Melville, NY. (Schulman endorses Schwartz on both Avvo and Schwartz’s LinkedIn profile: “I have worked with Shalom on various projects over the... last 5 years.” So there is more than a casual familiarity.) Once we hired Schulman, he proceeded directly in an attempt to defraud us out of many thousands of dollars. It took a 3-year fight (on our own) to recover more than half of what he’d taken. After this bitter experience, we wrote to Schwartz to inform him of the outcome from his referral. We also told him of our discovery that Schulman has a long history of legal malpractice, was sanctioned by the NY Bar and FL Bar in the 1980s, and has been personally embroiled in numerous civil disputes related to professional misconduct since at least 2003. We believe that, at best, Schwartz was negligent (lack of due diligence) in his referral; at worst, complicit with Schulman; and we stated that to him in our emailed letter. After a long wait, we have received NO reply from Schwartz, no explanation, no response to the question: “What responsibility do you take (for this 'negligent referral,' to use the legal term)?” We think Schwartz's judgment -- if not his honesty -- is sufficiently in doubt to warrant this review.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
