You really need to have an appointment with an attorney, as it is impossible to advise you over the forum as to how you need to cure a prior denial.

You can work if you have work permit. If you can find a job, is a totally different issue.

If you overstayed your status, the only way you can adjust if a citizen spouse sponsors you. You should consult with an attorney as to details.

You may remain until your application is granted. However, if it is denied, and you overstayed for more than 180 days,... you will be inadmissible...
