Hani Sarji

I, Hani Sarji, am the editor and proprietor of Sarji Law. I am a lawyer — licensed to practice in the state of New York — a writer, an entrepreneur, a tech enthusiast, and a member of Community Board 10.

Lawyer

My law office is conveniently located on corner of 83rd street and 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn — 8226 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11209.

I obtained my law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 2008 and a masters of law in taxation from New York Law School in 2011.

Prior to attending law school, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, with a minor in Government and Politics from St. John’s University; and a masters degree in English Literature from St. John’s University.

In my law practice, I use all aspects of the training that I received in my education. My writing skills are called upon every day — whether I am writing emails to clients, letters to opposing counsel, drafting pleadings and motions for court, or drafting contracts for clients. My tax and financial skills are used in real estate transactions and business transactions.

Writer

I have written about the federal estate tax in my own blog — Future of the Federal Estate Tax — and in a blog — Estate of Confusion. I won national recognition for blogging on the subject. Sarji Law strives to continue and expand on my blogging efforts.

Entrepreneur

I run my own law practice, which entails a commitment of countless hours per week. But the joy of running a business far outweighs the sacrifice and the challenge.

Because I am an entrepreneur, I can add much value to those who are starting and running a business. I have helped clients with numerous business-related issues — from starting a business entity to dissolving it.

I will give insight and tips on being an entrepreneur on Sarji Law. I am especially interested in the intersection of law and business.

Tech Enthusiast

When you walk into my law office, you will immediately realize that I love technology. I have two printers in the office, and a state-of-art scanner that scans directly into Evernote.

I run much of my practice from my iPad. I manage clients’ cases, documents, and tasks using MyCase, a virtual law office with bank-level security. My archive of forms and legal database is stored in Evernote. My mastery of Microsoft Word is advanced, but on the iPad, I like writing in plain text using Markdown.

The office computer has one advantage the iPad does not: HotDocs. I automate templates using HotDocs, which is something few lawyers do. I like exploring different logical choices and understanding the effect different choices have on the meaning of documents. I enjoy decoding the law so I can re-code it with a useful scripting language.

I will write about technology on Sarji Law. I have so much insight on how technology facilitates (and sometimes hinders) running a law practice.

Community Board 10 Member

In 2015, I was appointed to Community Board 10, which serves the communities of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and Fort Hamilton. I have been living continuously in Bay Ridge since 1986. Since January 2013, my law office has been located in a store-front office on the corner of 83rd street and 5th Avenue. I consider my appointment to CB 10 to be a great honor and a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much.

I am also a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and a member of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

Other Activities

In addition to being a practicing attorney, I am also a Notary Public and a licensed real estate broker.
