Daniel R. Alcott is the Founder & Managing Partner of Alcott Law Group and has extensive experience representing public charities, private foundations, trade associations, affordable housing organizations, “friends of” organizations, religious organizations, museums, commercial co-ventures, corporate sponsors, professional fundraisers and socially responsible profit seeking businesses dedicated to supporting charitable causes. His clients have included a wide variety of individuals and entities ranging from (i) large institutions including the March of Dimes, the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, the Entertainment Industry Foundation, The Dana Foundation, the International Center for Transitional Justice and The Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation, (ii) middle-market groups including the Alzheimer’s Association (Mid-Hudson Chapter), the National Down Syndrome Society, Keep A Child Alive (Alicia Keys’ organization), and Exploring the Arts (Tony Bennett’s foundation), to (iii) smaller and startup ventures, including charities formed for diverse purposes after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.
Daniel Alcott served on a New York State Bar Association special committee on governance, which issued a report to the House of Delegated recommending additional internal controls and governance modifications to the Bar Association. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Corporations where he participated in drafting a revision to the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law. Many of the principles highlighted in that draft were adopted in the recently enacted New York Nonprofit Revitalization Act. Daniel has also served as a member of the Nonprofit Organizations Committee of the New York City Bar Association. He currently serves on the Government Relations Committee of the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York and on the Boards of Directors of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (where he serves on the Board Governance and Nominations Committee) and The Education and Research Foundation of the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York. He is also the pro bono General Counsel to the Westchester Chamber Educational Foundation.
Daniel is a frequent lecturer in continuing legal education programs sponsored by the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, and the Westchester County Bar Association. He founded the Not-for-Profit Legal Institute, a forum for exchanging ideas among not-for-profit leaders and their counsel. He has published serval articles on nonprofit law and governance, including: “Preventing and Responding to Fraud and Financial Mismanagement: Not for Profit-Safeguards”- Westchester County Bar Association Westchester Bar Journal (Page 71, Volume 38, No. 1- 2012).
