You have to start over. You missed the deadline. You do not need a lawyer.

DO I need to be served, physically (meaning I received it personally) to be counted as "served" by a court.

Personal in hand service is not required in NY. You can still join the case. Call a lawyer ASAP if you have a defense or you want to keep your home.

Yes they do have such a right. They own the loan now. You still owe it. You need to deal with this.

It sounds like you have nothing in writing which will mean you have no case unless your mother is on your side.
