Alan Vanpraag

Alan Van Praag has been successfully practicing complex litigation matters for more than 40 years. He is admitted to practice, and has appeared before the United States Supreme Court, and numerous Appellate Courts. 

His expertise encompasses all manner of contractual disputes before courts in jurisdictions throughout the world. He has tried hundreds of cases and conducted a plethora of specialized arbitration hearings (i.e., maritime, all forms of energy products, paperboard, professional disputes, securities, construction) undertaken in all manner of fora (i.e., AAA, ICC, SMA), held in a variety of locations, both domestic and foreign. 

Mr. Van Praag has represented sovereign nations, major commodity houses, numerous industrial interests and many ordinary people seeking justice. 

He has served as a consultant in private international law for the United States Department of State at two negotiations concerning the content of a treaty at The Hague Conference on Private International Law, and as a consultant with regard to other issues for which the State Department required his specialized knowledge. 

Mr. Van Praag is an expert is multi-jurisdiction and multi-district disputes. He has particular expertise in maritime attachments; international bankruptcy, construction claims, piercing the corporate veil claims, and Racketeering Involving Corrupt Organizations (RICO) claims. He has testified as an expert in foreign courts with regard to disputes involving these areas of law. 

Alan Van Praag's successful cases have made new law on issues of cross border solvency, contractual statute of limitations and the application of Rule B of the Supplemental Rules of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure pertaining to maritime attachment. 

He has authored numerous articles relating to international and maritime legal issues and has lectured at both international and domestic fora on various legal subjects, including the U.S. Capitol. 

Among his many honors, he has been named by his peers as a preeminent attorney; the highest rating by Martindale Hubbell, the legal encyclopedia; named to Best Lawyers in New York for twenty years; and has been included as one of the four hundred leading international and maritime lawyers in the world by legal journals.

He is a Titular Member of the Comite Maritime International, a long-standing member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States, a former member of its Board of Directors and a former Chairman of several of its committees.
