Theodore Cox -- Founder, owner and lead attorney of the firm has more than 20 years of litigation experience, primarily in federal district and circuit courts, including habeas claims, appeals from the Board of Immigration Appeals, and other appeals in immigration matters. Mr. Cox taught English literature at the Guangdong Education College in Guangdong Province, China from 1990-1991. From 1991-1992, while working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Thailand, Mr. Cox taught human rights principles to Cambodian refugees in border area refugee camps.
Mr. Cox was formerly a staff member of Amnesty International in New York City. He remains an active advocate with Amnesty International and is currently an advisor to Amnesty’s China Coordination Group.
Mr. Cox has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the City University of New York, teaching immigration law. His article on the international standard for consideration of refugee claims, “Well-Founded Fear of Being Persecuted”: The Sources and Application of a Criterion of Refugee Status, 10 Brooklyn J. Int’l Law 333 (1984), was cited in by Justice Stevens in a pivotal United States Supreme Court case, INS v. Cardoza-Fonesca, 480 US 421, 440 (n. 24)(1987).
Mr. Cox undertakes many pro bono projects on behalf of Amnesty International USA, the Unitarian-Universalist Church, Friends First, Sojourners and many other NGOs. Mr. Cox’s practice represents a diverse population of asylum seekers and his commitment to helping them escape from persecution with their resettlement in the United States is recognized by immigration advocates and asylum-seekers across the United States.
