I live in a rent stabilized unit in one of the hottest rental markets in Brooklyn, NY. Over the last 5 to 3 years I noticed A LOT of changes, gentrification, etc. and a build-up of hostilities between Landlords and long-term tenants who had struggled to find proper housing during the downturns of the... economy (2006-08) and were blessed enough to stay the course and make a real home in their now much desired locale. Unfortunately, I found myself caught up in contention with my Landlord who took me to housing court (holdover proceedings) without merit. It was stressful, devastating and traumatic to say the least. I never been to housing court before and this experience has changed my life. When I received word that the Landlord was taking me to court, I became desperate and sought out legal assistance to help my case and was recommended to some "seasoned" housing court lawyers who only represented tenants. I presented my case to them and they took action on my behalf even though they were not familiar with the Brooklyn Housing Court terrain. Needless to say, they charged me premium legal fees and the retainer fees was WAAAAAYYYYYY out of my price range (remember I am rent stabilized and only fortunate enough to make a modest salary, living way below my means). I called around to the various Law organizations in the city and the Brooklyn Bar Assoc. referred me to Mr. Schiller...and thank God! Mr. Schiller's rates are fair and reasonable, his legal advice and excellent knowledge of the Brooklyn Housing Court landscape (proceedings, other counsels, judges, etc.) is invaluable. Jordan is very easy to talk to, calm, collected, patient (the other side played tricks, delayed and dragged out the trial period, etc.) and professional in every sense of the word (responsive, informative and utilized multiple means of communication to keep me in the loop). We won the case but now I'm looking forward to the full restoration of legal fees, since this case was superfluous, unwarranted and costly.
