Since I began my career as an attorney, the practice of law has changed dramatically. Although both my partner and I learned to be attorneys at large firms, their focus was not on the middle market. Our focus is.
Previously, lawyers focused on getting the client an excellent result and mentoring junior attorneys. Somewhere along the way, lawyers forgot that practicing law was supposed to be about the client. Our Firm returns the focus to the result and not how many hours it takes to get to that result.
At DuffyAmedeo LLP, we represent most of our clients on a flat or other alternative fee arrangements. Traditionally, attorneys make money by loading each case with junior associates and partners and spending as many hours on each matter as the client will tolerate. Under our business model, we work with the client to find an affordable fee that is fair to both DuffyAmedeo LLP and the client. Once that negotiation is out of the way, we can work together to accomplish your goal. With this arrangement, I am rewarded for working efficiently and fairly. Once we have been able to achieve the client’s goals, there is no fighting over writeoffs from invoices that are three times the estimated amount. The client does not need to scrutinize the invoice to make sure we did not overstaff the case or waste hours contemplating some ephemeral legal theory. All the client needs to do is revel in our accomplishments.
Many attorneys in various disciplines will tell you that they cannot do something like this. This is especially true for the two disciplines we focus on Commercial Litigation and Commercial Bankruptcy. The truth is that you can do this and we do. DuffyAmedeo LLP represents various debtors and creditors in bankruptcy cases and has done so with various alternative fee arrangements. In addition, we have represented both plaintiffs and defendants in commercial litigation matters and have agreed to fee arrangements other than hourly rates.
