Denied vacation because they said a coworker will be on maternity leave. Can they do that? Can I be fired if I call out sick?

Generally, an employer has a lot of discretion as to when you can use your vacation time.

Somebody was convicted on evidence provided (or not provided) by a bad cop. That bad cop is now in jail....
