I strongly recommend that when looking for an attorney, that you by-pass this one. Richard S. Hoffman is not an attorney that you want to hire. I am completely honest in letting you know that he is great as a numbers guy. He can figure out calculations without a calculator, pen or paper. This is an i...mpressive skill that I personally DO NOT possess, however, he is only interested in collecting your money. He needs constant follow-up, is lazy beyond words, and does not communicate or return calls without constant calls to his office. Mr. Hoffman didn’t send follow-up paperwork to me pertaining to my case even though it was my right to know what was happening with my case. I was notified of situations mostly by the Bankruptcy Court and rarely by Mr. Hoffman. I asked Mr. Hoffman for my mortgage history as I needed it for Family court to prove that my Bankruptcy payments had increased due to my ex-husband’s default and his court ordered responsibility but for two years (verifiable by emails). Mr. Hoffman continued to make excuses as to why he was unable to provide it but was ‘working on it’ TWO YEARS LATER. In the meantime, and since Mr. Hoffman is a weak advocate, my Bankruptcy payments increased on 3 separate occasions because he refused to make the Judge aware that my ex-husband (who continued to allow mortgage default) was responsible for the mortgage payments Pursuant to my Divorce Decree. At one point, Mr. Hoffman emailed paperwork to me for my signature. I had to make corrections to his work and call his office to fix it before I signed it. You have to be able to trust your attorney. Toward the end of my bankruptcy when I started seeing things that didn’t feel quite right, I went with him to one court hearing only to hear the judge tell him that he couldn’t approve my request to continue the sale of my home because he (Mr. Hoffman) had not filed the proper paperwork. This should be basic information for an attorney. As we all know, a home sale is time-sensitive. He could have cost me the sale of my home. I was glad I was there but wished that I had been to all the hearings rather than trusting that he was handling my situation(s) as Mr. Hoffman constantly told me just trust him and my presence wasn’t needed at court hearings. I eventually had to go to the manager of the law firm to get assistance about my case. Going to the manager was constant too but the manager was helpful to me each time and there were many times. (Emails will verify). I could give many more examples but won’t. Get an attorney who will work for you and not a paycheck. The sad part is that he gets paid either way once you sign the agreement. He didn’t tell me that once my home sold he would be paid an additional $2,000. I didn’t know until I saw the HUD sheet. He told me the paper I was signing was standard. If you are smart, you will get someone who you don’t have to babysit and who you can trust. An attorney should make your life easier and not add stress. Unfortunately, I am stuck with him until August of 2018 but after that I will file a formal complaint. While he is talented with numbers, he was also dishonest with me. After the home sold, my payments were higher than I thought they should be and couldn’t really explain why. Thank goodness for the Bankruptcy Court audit department who was able to catch it. They sent me a hefty refund check (for over-payments) due to his negligence and/or dishonesty – not sure which. Either way, I would not have known if it had not been for the Courts. I had asked him repeatedly about the discrepancy when the sale of my home should have settled the small amount in full, but he never explained properly. Again, I tell you to make the choice of someone who will help and not hurt you.
